I stood on the side walk for a long time. I had left Times Square behind me and was on Broadway, the live theater district in New York City. I wanted to create an image that perfectly captured the hustle and bustle of New York City and contrast that with the static timelessness of this historic cultural hot-spot. I took dozens of pictures from this exact same place before I got the one I wanted. I experimented with all types of shutter speeds, from 1/20th of a second, to 30 seconds. The former was too fleeting, it didn't contrast the moving with the still enough and the latter gave the illusion of a completely empty street, devoid of all cars and people, but with random streaks everywhere. An overly long exposure does that, it makes all moving things disappear, as their momentary positions emit insufficient light to "burn" itself into the image. I finally settled at a 4 second exposure time, as it gave me the perfect balance to show both the moving and the still, distinctly.
