The intense coloration of blood orange is caused by the pigment anthocyanins, which is often found in red berries, and extreme temperature fluctuations during the day and at night. The blood orange is a natural mutation from different orange varieties. The first blood oranges were bred in Sicily in the middle of the 20th century. Blood orange season ranges from winter to late spring, even until early summer. Blood oranges have a very high vitamin C content. In Sicily it is said that one can live 100 years if one eats a blood orange daily.
