In 1962, CBS hit a ratings gusher with The Beverly Hillbillies, a rustic sitcom about a poor mountaineer turned oil baron who relocates, along with his eccentric clan, to 'the Hills of Beverly'. Moving into a Beverly Hills mansion, the Clampett's retain their woodsy, hillbilly life-style, which is hilariously at odds with their newfound status among their wealthy neighbors. In their simplicity and humanity, it is often the seemingly out of touch Clampetts that get it right, while their neighbors are shown up as shallow, shielded and truly out of touch. In addition to sidesplitting comedic writing and bountiful sight gags, the real key to the great success of
The Beverly Hillbillies was its irrepressible cast.
Jed (Buddy Ebsen) is the patriarch of the clan, sensible if somewhat adrift from reality. Granny (Irene Ryan), who still makes her own soap in the mansion, is constantly on the look-out for a suitable husband for the beautiful but naive Elly May (Donna Douglas). Jethro (Max Baer, Jr.) is Jed's slightly stupid but lovable nephew, who foolishly prides himself on his 6th grade education and fancies himself a ladies man, with comical results.
The Beverly Hillbillies frequently topped the Nielsen ratings during its nine-season run and this 2-DVD set brings you twelve of the most hilarious episodes, including the first show, in which the Clampett's strike oil back in the hills.
