FROM AMISH TO AVERSEL - Growing up Amish at the end of a dirt road in NC was a bumpy ride but the lessons learned there are what inspired Aversel to be what it is today. We might've been the only Amish kids with a US Veteran as a father. Coming from a rough background, he joined the Amish hoping to give his children a better childhood than his own. It was there I learned self reliance and how to survive with the basics. At 5 am we were up working but any free time I had you could find me building campfires and shelters from branches, vines and leaves. No bushcraft tools or survival tools, just a little free time in nature. Like now, news back then was full of problems, but without TVs, radios, or computers, we didn't know. In the evenings if we weren't around the table, we were around a campfire. Those are still my best memories. How did I end up going from Amish to an outdoor survival gear company? It all started when a relative gave me a flint striker. It was a typical camping fire starter that wore down quickly but I loved it. It was waterproof and didn't break or need to be replaced like match sticks. Long story short, after wearing down a few more rods and struggling to find a better quality one, I decided to make my own. I was disappointed to find that ferrocerium can't be sourced in the US despite the clever wording companies use to hide that fact. As you can imagine transitioning from Amish to the business world, I learned some hard lessons in business survival. When I tried sourcing globally several manufacturers took my design ideas and had poor quality look a likes up for sale with fake reviews pouring in before we could even get our feet off the ground. A strong reminder, knowledge is the most important survival tool. We may have taken the long road here but rest assured our bushcraft gear will survive the test of time.
