WHAT: SEEDS of highest quality asparagus with tall, straight spears and a sophisticated taste. This perennial can remain viable for 10-25 years without the need for transplantation. For eating, use the young tender shoots of asparagus that grow just above the ground before the leafy buds open.  HOW TO GROW: Start asparagus seeds indoors or in a greenhouse between mid-February to May (10-12 weeks before last expected frost) under bright lighting. Soil temperatures for germination should be between 70-85 F. First, soak the seeds for a couple of hoursin lukewarm water, then plant each seed ½ inch deep in sterile, fertile soil in individual 2-inch pots. They should sprout in about 2-8 weeks. When the danger of frost has past and the seedlings are 10-12 weeks old, they can be transplanted outside. Space the transplants 18 inches apart in rows set 3-6 inches apart. If all the plants thrive, the extra crowns can be thinned out or transplanted later. As the plant grows, cover the crowns with soil and keep them moist (1 inch of water per week). Harvest only a few spears in the 3rd year so that you can harvest a full crop in the 4thyear.
