NUMBERED PLATE BLOCK OF 4 NEW STAMPS AS PICTURED. ~ On August 27, 2005 in Flushing, NY., the USPS honored Arthur Ashe (1943-93) a great tennis player who broke color barriers in the world of tennis. In 1968, he was the first African-American man to win the U.S. Open. In 1975, Ashe was the first black man to win at Wimbledon. What raised Ashe above athletic greatness, however, was his humanitarianism. He used his stature in tennis to speak out for equal and just treatment of people at home and abroad.
