Witchhazel is a unique plant that could be a small tree or shrub. The bark, leaves, twigs is used in astringent lotions and toilet water. Have you ever heard that you can find underground water by holding a forked branch? It is a myth associated with witch-hazel! This is the way it works. Walk over land holding a forked branch and when the branch finds water, the branch will draw down to the area where water is available. Myths are interesting; let’s get back to the tree! American Witchhazel is often multi-trunked. This tree can reach from 10 – 15 feet tall but can reach higher heights and 15 to 20 feet wide. This tree/shrub grows at a medium rate of 13 – 24” per year. Yellow slender petals appear in the fall and will linger for some time after the leaf falls. Peal green leaves will turn a lovely gold. Against the smooth gray bark the fragrant petals become brilliant yellow in color. This small irregular, rounded shaped tree will attract the birds and will grow in full sun to part shade. This tree will tolerate wet soils, pollution, shade and poor soil. Avoid extremely dry situations. Plant in rich, well-drained soils and water regularly until established. Hardiness Zones: 3 - 8. Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (ie. Garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out. In winter, plants will be shipped dormant.
