Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is not a weed at all but a lovely wildflower that is a tough self sufficient plant native of North American fields, wetlands, and prairies. It is the sole host plant for the struggling Monarch butterfly and is planted to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other winged insects. They thrive as a bush, shrub, or houseplant in zones 3 through 10. They will reach 3 to 4' in height when planted in your garden and will survive a cold winter when cut back and covered with mulch. They are wonderful attractant of wild life when planted in a garden but should be managed so they don't spread too much. They prefer bright direct light for 6 hours a day in cooler climates and bright indirect light in warmer climates. They are drought tolerant and cold tolerant and require almost no care when planted outside. In a pot, water when the soil is 50 percent dry. Shipping and handling can be very tough on live plants so please be sure to open and check your plant right away. Our team waters each plant before they are shipped and wrapped so they may not need to be water right away. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of the decline in indoor plants.
