From the opening guns at Fort Sumter to the surrender at Appomattox, three million civilians fought for four years across 10,000 battlefields. From 1861 to 1865, The American Civil War was the bloodiest war the world had ever seen. Over 600,000 men died in the fighting and over 900,000 men, or 3% of the population, were wounded in the only war ever fought on American soil by Americans.
