Amused when dropping a spring to the ground that it began to walk…Richard brought the spring home to his wife, Betty. Betty had a vision for the toy, found a name in the dictionary, “slinky”meaning stealthy, sleek, and sinuous. History was made as Slinky debuted at Gimbel’s Department Store in Philadelphia in 1945. Initially, there was skepticism about whether Slinky would sell, but all 400 Slinkys for sale were purchased in 90 minutes. Since then, over three hundred million Slinkys have been sold worldwide. Remarkably, the Slinky is still made in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania with the original equipment Richard James created.
