Powered by the 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney XR-2800 Double Wasp radial engine of 2,000hp, the Corsair required the largest propeller used on a single engine aircraft in WWII. Originally considered unsuitable for use on aircraft carriers by the US Navy, it was the Royal Navy that first used the Corsair from its carriers in April 1944. From then on the Corsair saw service in both Atlantic and Pacific theatres until the end of WWII.
