The North American B-25 Mitchell was a twin-engine medium bomber developed just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The aircraft will forever be synonymous with the Doolittle Raid, the daring attack on Tokyo by USAAF Mitchells launched from the deck of the USS Hornet. This raid helped to raise US morale in the aftermath of the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The B-25 featured a distinctive 'gull' wing as well as whole host of armaments. Early versions had glazed noses for the intended role as a tactical/medium bomber, but as the type matured more and more guns were added to the nose of the aircraft, thus increasing its capability as a low-level attacker. The B-25 was used throughout the globe during the Second World War, with nearly every Allied power operated the aircraft, including RAF, USAAF, USN and the Soviet Air Force. Called the Mitchell after the pioneer of US military aviation, Major General William 'Billy' Mitchell, nearly 10, 000 B-25s were produced and restored examples continue to impress air show audiences to this day.
