Prunus africana, is an evergreen tree native to the montane regions of sub-Saharan Africa and the islands of Madagascar, S?o Tom?, Bioko, and Grande Comore at about 9003,400 m (3,00010,000 ft) above sea level. The mature tree is 1025 m (3382 ft), open-branched, and often pendulous in forest, shorter and with a round crown of 1020 m (3070 ft) diameter in grassland. It requires a moist climate, 9003,400 mm (35130 in) annual rainfall, and is moderately frost-tolerant. Prunus africana is known by the common names African cherry, Pygeum, Iron wood, Red stinkwood, African plum, African prune and Bitter almond.
