It was originally hybridized in Italy in the early to mid 20th Century. It is a large, upright growing strapleaf type with colorful foliage in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, green and burgundy in a unique striped pattern. Crotons produce a white nondescript single white flower periodically, but are grown for the brightly colored foliage. AFD5 is rather large growing cultivar that will eventually reach 5 to 8 feet tall if left unpruned and untended, and has a tendency to grow upright, open at the bottom into a large tree-like shrub. With frequent pruning and maintenance it can be well maintained at a lower height. It can be incorporated as a background in mixed perennial beds, used as an accent, anchor or transition in a tropical landscape, or can be grown as a large potted plant indefinitely. AFD5 can be acclimated to grow indoors but generally will require supplemental lighting to retain foliage and full color.
