Saint Bernardine was born at MassaMarttima, in the territory of Siena Italy,in 1380 to a noble family. At age 6, he wasorphaned and left to be raised by his aunt.In 1397 he completed a course in civil andcanon law, whereupon he joined theConfraternity of Our Lady, connected with thehospital of Santa Maria della Scala, to helpserve the sick and begin a secluded religious life.

Bernardine joined the Franciscan Order in1402, was ordained in 1404 and began hismissionary career in 1417. Unfortunately,his lungs had a natural defect that preventedhis voice from being heard by large groups.Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin,he was delivered from his respiratory defectand his voice grew stronger with every sermon.His career is a record of tireless preachingjourneys, usually afoot, all over Italy.

He died in 1444 and was canonized in 1450.

Saint Bernardine of Siena is recognized todayas the patron of those who suffer fromrespiratory ailments. His feast day is May 20th.
