How to grow Clematis The standard clematis flower form is a large blossom with six or seven petals, measuring 5-6" across. There are also cultivars with smaller blossoms, double blossoms, and lovely bell-like flowers. Colors range from white to wine red, lavender to deep purple, and there are even a few yellow ones. Clematis prefer moist, well-drained soil that's neutral to slightly alkaline in pH. If your soil tends to be acidic, you should sweeten it periodically with limestone or a little wood ash. The best time to plant clematis is in spring or early- to mid-autumn, as warm, moist soil at these times of year aids good root establishment GERMINATE: Space the clematis seeds evenly on the planting mix, leaving at least 1/2 inch between the seeds. Sprinkle the seeds with a thin coating of the planting mix. Top the seeds and planting mix with 1/4 inch of sand. Gently water the pot to moisten the planting mix without disturbing the sand and seeds.Or you can soak the seeds in warm water at 40 ? for 24 hours, remove them and control them to dry. The seeds can germinate in about 3-4 weeks. CARE: Once established, care of clematis vines is minimal with the exception of watering. They should be watered about an inch (2.5 cm.) or so weekly, and more deeply during dry spells. Mulch should be replenished each spring.
