The Kingdom of Prussia, known as Königreich Preußen in German, existed from 1701 to 1918 and was a key player in the unification of Germany in 1871. Its capital was Berlin, although it took its name from the region called Prussia. Despite its dissolution in 1918, Prussia is considered the legal predecessor of the unified German Reich and a direct ancestor of today's Federal Republic of Germany. The Allied Control Council formally abolished Prussia on 25 February 1947 due to its association with militarism and reaction, paving the way for the current setup of German states. However, the Free State of Prussia, established after World War I, was a significant democratic force in Weimar Germany until the nationalist coup of 1932. The Kingdom's cultural legacy is notable, and it is promoted today by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz), which is one of the largest cultural organizations in the world.
