Red maple trees (Acer rubrum) grow up to 60 feet tall when planted outdoors, but make a good bonsai specimen when the training begins when the tree is young. You will have a young tree ready to begin bonsai training about two years after the seed germinates and begins growing. 1.Fill a small propagation tray with 2 to 3 inches of moist horticulture sand. Stick the seeds about 1/4- to 1-inch-deep into the sand. 2.Slide the propagation tray into a clear plastic bag and seal it. Place the covered tray in a refrigerator for 60 to 90 days to duplicate the outdoor cold stratification period. 3.Remove the seeds from the refrigerator and set in a warm area that receives indirect sunlight. The top of a refrigerator works well for germinating seeds. 4.Open the plastic cover each day to freshen the air inside the bag and monitor the moisture level. Spray the sand with water to keep it moist like a sponge. 5.Remove the plastic cover once the seed sprouts appear. Move the propagation tray to a warm sunny area. Monitor the sand moisture closely since it will dry out quickly without the plastic cover. Apply water to the sand as needed to keep it moist. 6.Move the sand carefully away from the tree sprout roots with your finger after three to four weeks of growth to check the root length. Transplant the tree sprouts once the roots are 1-inch-long. 7.Fill 4-inch pots with a moist potting soil. Transplant each tree sprout into its own container. Set the containers in a sunny area and monitor the soil moisture to keep the soil evenly moist. 8.Grow the trees until they are at least 8 inches tall before starting to train them into bonsai specimens.
